Overview
Biostatistics encompasses the study and development of statistical, mathematical, and computer methods applied to the biological and health sciences. The Department of Biostatistics and Data Science has a diverse array of areas in which faculty and students engage, including clinical trials, longitudinal analysis, survival analysis, missing data, stochastic processes, nonparametric statistics, time series, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology, statistical learning, Big Data, Bayesian statistics, and others.
The MS in Biostatistics and Data Science provides training in research design, basic statistical theory, data analysis, computer applications, and statistical consultation. Graduates of the program are prepared to assume statistical posts in government, private health agencies, or health research programs. The program emphasizes fundamental statistical theory and methods and provides the basis for doctoral-level biostatistical studies.

Admission Requirements
In addition to the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health’s general admission requirements, Biostatistics MS candidate applications will also be evaluated against the following considerations:
- Hold an undergraduate degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or one of the physical, biological, or social sciences
- Successful completion of coursework in calculus and linear algebra
Program Requirements
The MS program requires students to complete 36 credit hours as detailed in the Biostatistics MS degree planner. Most full-time students complete the MS program in 18-24 months. All students are eligible to elect to complete one or more graduate certificates in addition to required coursework.
